Hermann Joseph Schmitz (1841 – 1899)

Hermann Joseph Schmitz was born on 16 May 1841 in Cologne and was ordained as priest on 7 April 1866. From 1866 to 1868 he studied to be a cononist at the Sapienza in Rome. In 1886 he was the main priest in Krefeld. In 1893 he became suffragan bishop in Cologne. From 1896 to 1899 he was president of the “Christian Society for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in the Archbishopric of Cologne” as well as chairman of the board of the museum. Hermann Joseph Schmitz died in Cologne on 21 August 1899.
