Leiko Ikemura "Mare e Monti"
Cabinet exhibition in Room 10

With the catastrophe that befell Japan on 11 March 2011, the question arose for Japanese-born artist Leiko Ikemura whether and how to react to it with an immediate artistic statement. Fukushima was to provide the occasion for an exhibition, her theme being human hubris and ignorance as the actual cause of the disaster. At the spur of the moment, the Berliner Kunst-Werke availed itself as an exhibition location. On 8 June 2011, the show opened with the title "Breaking News - Thoughts" (including works by Shōmei Tōmatsu, Yutaka Takanashi und Daido Moriyam, Rosemarie Trockel und Wim Wenders ). Although we originally planned to repeat a portion of the exhibition in Room 10, we have now opted to allow for a year's interval to pass. During this time, Leiko Ikemura completed the series of paintings she had already begun in 2010, "Mare e Monti", which we now display. As artistic forms of expression, the exhibition and the series of paintings seem to imply and supplement one another. They express an attitude that does not exhaust itself in hasty blame, but rather gives a lasting presence to the change in consciousness.
