3rd Sound Workshop
Kolumba’s Third Sound Workshop is dedicated to non-European and European modal music. Under the guidance of Dhurpad singer Amelia Cuni and Maria Jonas, both the basics of Indian ragas and the basics of Gregorian chants may be learned. The founder of the Benedictine Order, Benedict of Nursia (6th century), created the "Divine Office", which is still performed in cloisters seven times a day. From the Jewish tradition of praying three times a day, the early church developed the precursor of today’s Hours, by which prayer to God is not to cease throughout the world. – A comparable phenomenon is expressed in the Indian concept of "Ashtayama". According to Indian Hindu tradition, a day is divided into eight units, each lasting three hours. Each of these periods of time is attributed its own music based on a raga. All of them make a journey through the hours and atmospheres of the day possible. – Both rituals are rooted in a tradition of meditation and immersion. But despite a certain spiritual and musical relatedness, both cultural circles have produced wholly different musical forms and songs. This is what the Third Sound Workshop with Dhurpad singer Amelia Cuni will be exploring further.
