ACHT BRÜCKEN | Music for Cologne
John Cage "A Collection of Rocks"

Show film
Projektensemble 12
Artistic direction: John McAlpine
Coordination: Albrecht Zummach
A cooperation of between the music festival ACHT BRÜCKEN and KOLUMBA

The Projektensemble 12 may be designated as a wild mixture of the independent Cologne music scene: professionals, students, and talented pupils. Thus, with respect to the realization of "A Collection of Rocks" with 44 musicians, it is in keeping with the intention of the premiere in 1985 in Zagreb, which John Cage had performed with musicians disposing over extremely diverse levels of education. Since 2005, pianist John McAlpine and composer Albrecht Zummach have been working on behalf of the KGNM (Cologne Society for New Music) to perform a contemporary work for the Cologne Night of Music with a large orchestra, filled equally with lay and professional musicians. Based on these experiences, the ensemble was put together for the performance at Kolumba. With this piece, Kolumba will become a sculpture of sound you can walk through. John Cage assigns to the individual groups of musicians different "playing areas", which they will occupy in sequence. The listeners may move about the room freely and thus, create their own personal versions of the composition.
