Al-Andalus (11th Sound Workshop) Maria Jonas and Ars Choralis Coeln Islamic rule over the Iberian Peninsula lasted nearly eight hundred years: from 710 to 1492. Spain has been influenced by Islam and its culture more deeply and lastingly than all other regions in Western Europe. The 11th Sound Workshop deals with this phenomenon and retraces the influences of Arab culture, above all in music: the effect of Arabian love poetry on the troubadours up to Arabian motifs of love in German minstrel song, Arabian musical instruments in Europe, Arabian music in Christian Spain and in medieval Europe, Arabian tales in the Orient and in Moorish Spain, Oriental narrative material in Christian Spain… the list may be expanded indefinitely, for example with the influence of Arab architecture on the art of building in the Middle Ages, the influences of Arabian philosophy and natural sciences in medieval Europe and lest we forget, the translations into Latin of the Arabian philosophers and natural scientists. Thus, it becomes clear: What is termed “Moorish Spain” is a historical epoch of utmost importance for the Ibero-Romanic nations and for all of Europe, an epoch full of splendor and tragedy, whose impact may be felt still today. The Arabic name for this epoch is: Al-Andalus - .الأندلس With respect to this complex theme, Ars choralis has invited a specialist from Morocco: Samira Kadiri is a singer, researcher and the director of “La maison de la Culture” in Tétouan. During her studies of Arabian-Moroccan music, she specialized in songs from Morocco and Andalusia, and she enjoys a very special place in the world of Arabian music. Beyond the borders of Morocco, she is highly regarded as a singer, having received many awards. For example, in 2007 she was the first Arab woman to be distinguished by the EU, and likewise, in 2008, the UNESCO gave her a prize for her research on the Ancient Music of Morocco; in 2010 and 2011, she received prizes in Paris and Lebanon. For this workshop, Bassem Hawar (Bagdad/Cologne) will be assisting her as an instrumentalist and taking on the role of her simultaneous translator as well.
