String quartet of Ensemble Mosaik

The philosopher Tatsuru Uchida (*1950) describes the significance for humanity of the initiation of interment as the creation of a third category mediating between the living body and the corpse: that of the dead. They are here, and yet absent. This contradiction, this reservation concerning the dichotomy, impels us to think of the dead time and again, an activity without end. In the incomprehensible echo that the dead leave behind, we are sometimes tempted to identify their voices and to give them a form, but then they cannot be distinguished from the reflection of our own voices. The voice of the dead is not accessible to us. At this point, it would perhaps be better to refrain from any verbalization, any kind of setting to music; hearing is activated.
