Howard Skempton,
Commemorations (UA)
For All Souls 5
Born in 1947, English composer Howard Skempton is one of the most radical, intelligent and lusty advocates of musical reduction and clarification. His works are often very short, surprisingly clear-headed and essentially tight. Someone once spoke of the "emancipation of consonance" in connection with his compositional style, that is, with remarkably simple harmonic progressions without ever being kitschy or backward-looking. On 1 November 2023, as every year, a commemoration of the dead "For All Souls' Day" will take place in the Boehm Chapel of the "Madonna in the Ruins". For this occasion, the Kolumba Art Museum has commissioned Howard Skempton to write a new work entitled "Commemorations". The eleven small pieces for flute, accordion, glockenspiel and cello will be premiered by the ensemble hand werk with accordionist Dorrit Bauerecker. We dedicate the concert to Father Gabriel Weiler, OFM, the longtime Rector Ecclesiae of Kolumba Chapel, who passed away on October 8.
Admittance from 4.45 pm, free admission
