“Collection for an Open Museum” is the title of a work which has been conceived for the museum by artist Manos Tsangaris who lives in Cologne. In five parts (so far) which will unfold over the summer months, this drummer, composer, author and draftsman born in 1956 will consider this far-reaching subject from all sides. The “Marble Maze” forms the core of his work: this is a kinetic installation in the “Window Room” of the museum to be presented on the basis of a score with initial sketches, material samples and models which will then be completed during the exhibition. From mid May onwards, the “spatially-installed composition for one person in the centre” – as it is subtitled – will be on display. The “Marble Maze” is not going to be a sculpture of sounds or a synthesis of an all-encompassing artwork but rather a piece of music going beyond all traditional genres which has been composed out into the room and which gives its premiere to every visitor when he enters the room and encounters these balls making their ways along the tracks. The “Open Museum” transfers the process of the Marble Maze‘s coming into being which is kept transparent into the process of the work itself. In his collection Manos Tsangaris combines the “Marble Maze”, a series of drawings “Leap in Time”, the reading “Mundmaßung” and the concert “Bilingual” as well as a booklet in the series “… in the Window” with the various means of the language of art which can only relate to each other because of their “untranslatability”. “Collections for the Open Museum” is the Diözesanmuseum’s contribution to the programme of this year’s “MusikTriennale Cologne”.
