Light projection onto Kolumba

Mischa Kuball’s light projection onto the outside walls of Kolumba.
KolumbaShift takes the window of Room 10 as its departure point and as the measure of its projection. Its movement scarcely noticeable, the materialized light glides horizontally across the west and south facades of Kolumba as a constant (re-)imaging of the dimension-giving window, entering the opened interior spaces, and then leaving again. Only when entering the rooms, does its form change. Clearly defined on the outside, confusingly intangible on the inside—a picture made of light extends across and into Kolumba. Continually, but unbelievably slowly, the process takes place, questioning the materiality of the walls, saturating the contents of the room with light, and bringing movement to the limits of what it is possible to perceive. Mischa Kuball’s clearly defined light projection KolumbaShift appears like a sign, which for a while, partially dissolves the materiality of the architecture, making us aware of the building as a container that radiates into its environment, and almost dissolving the boundary between the static and the dynamic. As a continuation of our exhibition series in Room 10, on the First Christmas Holiday 2010 at precisely 1 second after midnight is when the Projection KolumbaShift begins. In the framework of this year’s exhibition “Noli me tangere!” it will remain the only intervention undertaken in this room, which will change it without touching it. The installation may be seen every day from dusk to dawn until Candlemas on 2 February. An artist booklet is being published, 32 pages, DIN A5, in an edition of 300, € 10.- (Due to unforeseen technical difficulties, the work had to be discontinued).
