11/16 10th Soundworkshop

6. November 2016, 12 to 4 p.m.
Maryam & Maria (10th Sound Workshop)
Ars Choralis Coeln, Banu and Sanstierce

Maryam and Maria, a Persian and a German woman, one Muslim and one Christian. Each have founded a respective female ensemble: Banu and Ars Choralis Coeln. Both are now joining together with their ensembles on a collaborative project. Central to this encounter is learning as a process where the one learns the repertoire of the other: this being Christian and Muslim Songs of Praise to God. It includes Sufi songs by Dschalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi (Persia), Laudes (Italy) and Cantigas de Santa Maria (Portugal). The Sufi songs that go back to Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi (1207-1273), the Laudes of the disciples of St. Francis of Assisi (1181/82-1226) and the Cantigas de Santa Maria compiled by Alfonso X el Sabio (1221-1284) are wonderful attests to the 13th-century spirituality that still move us even today. Collaborative workshops are in the planning that will take place over a longer period of time. The 10th Sound Workshop at Kolumba marks the launch of this search for a mutual repertory. We cannot shut our eyes to the fact that in many places throughout the world, people are suffering and losing their lives because they are Christians or Muslims or simply because they do not have the "right" faith. As musicians, as singers, what is it that we can do? We can sing together when there are no words. In song, we can build bridges between cultures and religions. And we must begin doing this here and today in Europe. | With Maryam Akhony (Cologne/ Teheran) – Persian song, Bassem Hawar (Cologne/Bagdad) – Djoze, Dominik Schneider (Essen) – Flute/ Gittern, Ars Choralis Coeln & Workshop participants
