Fritz Hauser – Hatching

Workshop concert for Raimund Girke

"As a child, I was very fascinated by neocolor drawings, where you first drew colored fields on a sheet, then covered the whole thing with black paint and then scratched out figures with a pen, which then had random color patterns. I also found ‘tracing’ very fascinating. Placing a thin sheet of paper over an object (e.g. a coin) and carefully making a tracing with a pencil. What both activities have in common is the repetitive sound: a scraping, scratching, wiping, which can produce an astonishing range of overtones with different materials and at different speeds. These overtones are produced by all rubbing, scraping, grinding, polishing, scratching, brushing, wiping and similar processes. Every surface has its own sound and with the right tool it can be made audible - distilled, so to speak. In spring 2008, I realized a solo piece with this playing technique and a medium-sized gong and performed it several times. Over the years, I have created a complex series of works with hatching variations in large and small formations, from solo to symphony orchestra and beyond the purely musical form."
