10/23 A different view of art

The material of a work of art can change so much over time that a its meaning in term of content is sometimes difficult to be understood. Restoration is then supposed to mediate between the original and the now state, but can have a considerable influence on appearance and effect.

This area of tension between aged material and the effect created by restoration will be illustrated using the example of the very different restoration histories of two works of art from the present and the Middle Ages. The paper cuts by Felix Droese, created in the early 1980s, and the altarpiece with the depiction of the Last Judgement, created around 1500 and attributed to the master of the Ursula legend, will be examined.
