2002 Herbert Falken
September to December 2002
Herbert Falken – Works from the 1990s
Stars for Kolumba – Part 2
The »stellar constellation« of our exhibition series for the new building will change in September. In addition to a selection of main works from various areas of the collection, the attention will be directed toward another group of works which – because of their size – forms a galaxy of its own: Herbert Falken’s works from the 1990s. These works are a continuation of his cyclical working methods which continue what could already be perceived in our first exhibition of Falken’s works seven years ago. Falken experiences his work as a systematic development of pictorial imagination, as a restless search for form approaching destruction. This time the focus lies on a group of works, »Gitterköpfe« (bar heads), in which the inner captivity of the individual as well as his chance of transcendental experience finds a pictorial form which wants to free itself of any bias. “The subject of Christian art has been settled” said Falken several years ago, “what makes art art is not the Christian aspect but the form”. This conviction is the basis for a long-standing relationship, to which the Diözesanmuseum owes a lot, such as the fascinating and very extensive collection of works to be shown on the occasion of Herbert Falken’s seventieth birthday. Our homage includes the ascendants of the exhibition: works by Heinz Breloh, Franz Ittenbach, Antonio Saura and Paul Thek as well as the video installation “Der militärisch industrielle Komplex” (The Military Industry Complex) by Klaus vom Bruch.
