Reencounter with the Unknown – Part 6
With Part 6 of the series of exhibitions “Reencounter with the Unknown”, begun in 1993, new acquisitions are once again included into the context of the collection. Recently a large scale work from 1986 by Herbert Falken (b. 1932) – from a large donation of over 300 of his works given by him to the Diözesanmuseum for the new “Kolumba” building – was exhibited. We are now showing in three of the museum rooms 73 drawings from the 1970s and 80s which show the artist’s main themes: his confrontation with the existential anguish of man. “The Man in the Block” is a working title that is representative of the introspection of the human being searching for ways to break through the isolation in this life. Falken’s drawings correspond with the “Cane for the Blind” by Rebecca Horn (b. 1944), who since the beginning of the 70s has dealt with the possibilities of perception as well as with their extension in respect of a search for meaning. Her sculptures, in which she connects utilitarian objects with precise mechanics to become movement procedures, develop a penetrating sculptural poetry with an affinity towards human behaviour. The “Cane for the Blind”, groping around in the room becomes a metaphor of the search as such. An outstanding new acquisition has been made in the field of the classical modern movement with the wooden sculpture “Mary and Joseph” by Gerhard Marcks, which is now displayed in the midst of medieval sculptures. After having been confiscated as degenerate art in 1937 the work has now been acquired from private ownership for the collection. As an additional room, we are showing Jannis Kounellis’ “Tragedia Civile” at the Cologne Kunstverein.
