Hans Josephsohn – Reliefs and Drawings
Sterne für Kolumba – Teil 9
On the occasion of his 85th birthday we present the Swiss sculptor Hans Josephsohn, who is largely unknown in Germany, with some of his works from our collection. The artist, born in Königsberg in 1920, has created an oeuvre which concentrates on a variation of virtually archaic basic types of free-standing sculpture: standing or reclining figures and half length figures form the spectrum. They are characterised by an ambivalence of the almost abstract figure whose individuality is secured by its form, material and surface. Josephsohn uses plaster or clay for modelling and casts his sculptures into bronze or brass, again placing himself within a two thousand year artistic tradition. The exhibition shows reliefs from different phases of his work and a selection of so far unpublished drawings. These small-scale studies captivate by their intimacy and give an authentic insight into the sculptor’s thoughts. A richly illustrated workbook has been published to accompany the exhibition.
