Stephan Baumkötter (b. 1958) “draws” his abstract pictures with thick oil crayons. The colours, which tend towards white, ochre and brown, are applied in many layers. They conceal structures, which are thought to be “underneath” in the picture space. The surface of these paintings reveals only very little about how they have come into existence – the closer one approaches the pictures, the more distant they seem to become.
