Klaus vom Bruch »The Eyewitness«

Are you an eyewitness? What did you see? Try to remember! Or do you want to deny having been there? The video installation bearing the title “The Eyewitness” set up by Klaus vom Bruch for our series “…in the Window” forces us to think about our relationship to pictures. What is our responsibility to them or may we be indifferent towards them? Vom Bruch projects certain pictures on the windows of two doors opening and closing again to “Am Hof” Street – these consist of short sequences of a few seconds, in which he condenses stories whose beginnings and ends we do not know. Using this condensation of movement at precisely the right moment, vom Bruch conjures pictures that look like moving still-lives. They are monumental still-lives of an event which makes us expect the worst. The situations are difficult to assess and perhaps contain violence. We become eyewitnesses by ascribing to these snapshots our own actions in the knowledge that they have a real origin in which we were (presumably) not involved. We connect the changing pictures with each other, the pictures in turn are connected with sound which fills the room and both become connected with us. Our memory writes the stories, or is it our fantasy? Whether we can remember the context of these pictures or whether we imagine it – there is always an eyewitness, someone, who is present. We are in the middle of things. We are involved, even fifty-one years after the Second World War. (Klaus vom Bruch, born in 1952, lives in Cologne). During the opening hours of the museum, the exhibition will run with an interior projection. Outside opening hours an exterior projection will take place.. A booklet will be published in the series “… in the Window”, 32 pages, with illustrations.
