2008 Man Leaving Earth
14 September 2008 to 31 August 2009
Man Leaving Earth
About Creation
After the successful first year in the new building (150000 visitors) Kolumba is developing its own rituals: Every year on 14 September Kolumba will show a new exhibition with a choice of objects from its own collection. In order to create memorable pictures we show the richness of the collection in perfect correspondence with the architecture. The title »Man Leaving Earth« derives from a painting in three parts by Felix Droese. In open dialogues the presentation raises the issue of the responsibility of mankind for the creation and shows artistic drafts of "cosmic" images of the world. The conditions of human existence as well as the possibility of man's salvation are questioned by the exciting combination of various media and works from completely different times of origin: There are medieval books of hours, sculptures, paintings and comtemporary video installations. The presentation of an Romanic ornamental floor from St. Pancras church in Oberpleis certainly is a highlight. The »marble maze« by Cologne artist Manos Tsangaris, a »spatially-installed composition for one person in the centre«, offers a contemporary context. Further more, you can see works by Michael Kalmbach, Marcel Odenbach, Bénédicte Peyrat, Werner Schriefers, Phil Sims and Andor Weininger. Objects by Paul Thek, who would have been 75 this year, are a central theme in the presentation. With "Room 10" we will continue our series »...in the window« with changing artistic positions (every three months).
Works on display:
Works by Simon Bening, Heiner Binding, Erich Bödeker, Heinz Breloh, Karl Burgeff, Eduardo Chillida, Peter Dreher, Felix Droese, Herbert Falken, Bill Fontana, Martin Frommelt, Jeremias Geisselbrunn, Peter Hausmann, Hans Josephsohn, Michael Kalmbach, On Kawara, Heinrich Küpper, Jannis Kounellis, Jörg Lederer, Stefan Lochner, Marcel Odenbach, Benedicte Peyrat, Thomas Rentmeister, Annamaria und Marzio Sala, Werner Schriefers, Richard Serra, Phil Sims, Paul Thek, Peter Tollens, Simon Troger, Manos Tsangaris, Purvis Young
(Exhibition catalogue: Auswahl zwei)
