New Beginnings 89

Book Art Class at Burg Giebichenstein
When the exhibition 1919 49 69ff started, one important date was necessarily missing: 1989, the year of German reunification. We had already invited guests and planned a workshop exhibition, which can now be realized at last – following the relaxation of the COVID-19 lockdown measures. Ten students and their tutor Sabine Golde, Professor of Book Art at Burg Giebichenstein at the art academy of Halle, set to work in Room 21 for a week at the end of 2019. Inspired by the annual exhibition at that time, some of them identified more situations entailing new beginnings and created works about experiences, reminiscences and stories relating to 1989. As the Bauhaus was also a topic covered in the previous semester the selection of works spanned the period from 1919 to the present. Other students addressed museum exhibits – in a dance performance for example – or were inspired by Peter Zumthor’s architecture. For more information about the latter see the booklet “autumn behind glass”. The contributing artists are: Paulina Brunner, Friederike Dolinschek, Anna Egerter, Dorothea Flämig, Sabine Golde, Thomas Kober, Florentine Schaub, Paula Schneider, Louis Steven and Marlene Milla Woschni.

The Book Art Class and Kolumba have now been collaborating for several years with a long-term perspective, expressed in annual purchases of works for our collection along with other forms of cooperation. A flyer has been produced by the class to accompany the show, and is available for free at the entrance.
