close Up – lontano 3

The Music Prize of the Kunststiftung NRW – Mauricio Kagel Music Prize was awarded in May 2024 to composer, drummer, and installation artist Manos Tsangaris. The prize money includes a grant for the performance of a new work with an ensemble from North Rhine-Westphalia. close Up – lontano 3 was written and staged for the architecture and unique atmosphere of Kolumba – the special interior design and the lively simultaneity of absolute reverberation and the finest sound proximity reflect the basic idea of the work: music in which both proximity (close Up) and distance (Italian: lontano, far away) can be experienced. Manos Tsangaris says: “The work deals with the presence of human beings, the dance of events, and what one hears and sees from near and far.” The audience is guided from station to station in small groups. Chapter by chapter, a story emerges that does not reveal its secrets, but makes them productive. At every moment, the participants form the place where they are, and the sequence of images forms narratives. Silence here is not the absence of sound, but what constitutes it in itself and with us.
